My teenager had finals this week. And prior to the tests, I received a flyer inviting parents to buy a care package for them as a fund raiser. Here’s part of what it said:
“Parents encourage your students as they finish strong!”
Two different packages were offered, one for $10 and one for $15. Here’s what the $15 Royal Flush Package offered:
- Dasani Water
- Powerade
- Fruit Snack
- Breakfast Bar
- Ruffles
- Skittles
- Poptart
- Starburst Fruit Chews
- Tic-tac mints
- Fudge Brownie
- Oreo Cookies
- Cheese Crackers
- Life Savers
- King-size Snickers
- Rice Krispy Treat
- Cheese Doritos
- Otis Spunkmeyer Muffin
Is this the stuff that makes a teen finish strong? A flood of high fructose corn syrup and empty calories? How on earth is a teen suppose to focus after a supply of junk like that?
I love my son’s school, but they have a lot to learn about nutrition. How can a mom teach her children about health and nutrition when schools offer such poor choices? Something is seriously wrong with this picture. I don’t know where to begin. I feel like I’m fighting a giant!
A “king size” one.

I agree with you. Maybe we should come up with an alternative ‘healthy’ list and recommend it.
Thanks,

You a right on target, Tiffany! What are some healthy alternatives?
Water bottles
Fruit like apples or oranges
Nuts or trail mix
How about a personal note of encouragement telling your son/daughter you are praying for them?
