This weekend my daughter, her best friend and I hiked through Ute Valley Park(hiking trail on the west side of Colorado Springs). Just us three girls. The views were incredible. Pine trees and aspens and scrub oak. White sandy trails, grassy fields, rock formations, and the beauty of Pikes Peak in the background.
Even though we were surrounded by such beauty I felt afraid. My guard was up. My senses, on high alert. I even had the girls stop once so I could listen. I thought I heard a growl. Ya, I know I was paranoid. The girls laughed at me. But I didn’t have anything to protect us in case we found ourselves dealing with wildlife or a stranger danger. There are bears and mountain lions here on rare occasions. I felt vulnerable and small. Where’s my dog or husband when I need them? Bear mace? And as someone who has struggled with paralyzing fear, this was another brave moment for me. A breakthrough towards even greater freedom. I felt empowered facing my fears head on.
And God made sure I saw reminders of His presence through engravings left by those who’ve gone before me. I so appreciated the visual reminders when I needed them most. I hope they encourage you too.
One obvious symbol: the cross.
Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.” Matthew 16:24
And one clear word: BE.
Be still, and know that I am God. ~ Psalm 46:10
Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go. ~ Joshua 1:9
So where is God when I’m afraid? The same place He’s always been. Right next to me, reminding me I never walk alone.
Q4U: Do you struggle with fear? If so, how do you move forward?

I hiked with many different people in the Washington Cascade Mountains and also completed several backpacking trips in Washington and Wyoming, near Yellowstone. Also did a few hikes in Colorado by myself. I even went BACKPACKING by myself without a weapon, other than my Golden, Reggie. Sleeping in the deep woods at night by yourself is a bit spooky, but it really didn’t bother me. I always told my friends that if a cougar or bear had me for a snack, it was O.K. because I was invading his space!!! And, I knew that I would be with Jesus when the cougar or bear was digesting me, so then it was really O.K.!!!

I love your adventurous spirit. I went backpacking twice right after high school with a group of alumni. What a great time we had. I love your courage and your faith. 🙂 Keep hiking with Jesus.

I so relate to the phrase “someone who has struggled with paralyzing fear.” Love the signs and wonders on your hike, and the encouragement of walking head on into and through your fear. The picture of you and your daughter is adorable.
