One of my favorite things about living free in Christ is the fact that I am free from lies that once held me captive. Have you ever heard any of these lies?
You’ll never change.
What’s wrong with you? (making you believe you are wrong for existing)
You’re a failure.
You’re worthless.
You’re a train wreck.
You make a mess out of everything.
You’re not that talented, so don’t even try.
You’ll never amount to anything.
I’ll never overcome this.
I’ll always be fat.
I’ll always struggle with anxiety.
I’m not pretty.
I’m such a coward.
I’m socially awkward and I’ll never make friends.
No one will like me if they really knew me.
I’ll never succeed at anything.
No one who ever marry me because of my past.
I’m too dysfunctional for God to use me.
Why are you so stupid?
I’m too old to have purpose.
Dreaming is useless.
I’m not worth investing in.
There is no hope for me, I’m divorced.
I’ll never get out of debt.
I’ll never quit drinking.
If I take care of myself, I’m being selfish.
As you can see, lies can take on various forms: First person, second person, questions, absolutes, and more. The challenge is lies continue to creep into our lives, but we can fight back day by day with truth.
The truth is:
You are significant.
You are worth taking good care of.
You can change.
You aren’t your past.
You are talented and smart and beautiful.
You aren’t the labels people have put on you.
You can dream at any age.
You have purpose.
God created you because He loves you.
And His love covers any and all lies.
So the next time you find yourself listening to lies, try replacing them with truth. It’s a daily battle sometimes, but we can live victorious, joy-filled lives. And we aren’t being selfish to enjoy the life God gave us. So go out there and show the world what you’ve got please!
