Last night, I found an old notebook of Justin’s. Because of his writing, it must be early elementary. This particular page caught my attention.
I didn’t show the whole picture here, but there’s a slide to the right. Must be the school playground. There’s also another kid to the left, a sun, a cloud and two birds in the sky. See the boo boo on his knee?
THE ABOVE READS: If a kid fell while everyone was in a hurry I would help him and take him to the office, and he’d heal his boo boo. I would also play with him at recess time. That’s what I would do.
Well if that didn’t bless my mommy heart last night! But I noticed something else. The way he wrote this “while everyone was busy.” Wow, sounds like many of us today! Who was he thinking of then? Other kids, his teachers, his family? This scene reminded me of the story of the Good Samaritan. Here’s the Message version from Luke 10:25-37:
Just then a religion scholar stood up with a question to test Jesus. “Teacher, what do I need to do to get eternal life?”
He answered, “What’s written in God’s Law? How do you interpret it?”
He said, “That you love the Lord your God with all your passion and prayer and muscle and intelligence—and that you love your neighbor as well as you do yourself.”
“Good answer!” said Jesus. “Do it and you’ll live.”
Looking for a loophole, he asked, “And just how would you define ‘neighbor’?”
Jesus answered by telling a story. “There was once a man traveling from Jerusalem to Jericho. On the way he was attacked by robbers. They took his clothes, beat him up, and went off leaving him half-dead. Luckily, a priest was on his way down the same road, but when he saw him he angled across to the other side. Then a Levite religious man showed up; he also avoided the injured man.
“A Samaritan traveling the road came on him. When he saw the man’s condition, his heart went out to him. He gave him first aid, disinfecting and bandaging his wounds. Then he lifted him onto his donkey, led him to an inn, and made him comfortable. In the morning he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, ‘Take good care of him. If it costs any more, put it on my bill—I’ll pay you on my way back.’
“What do you think? Which of the three became a neighbor to the man attacked by robbers?”
“The one who treated him kindly,” the religion scholar responded.
Jesus said, “Go and do the same.”
Father God, thank you for using this sweet find to remind me of what really matters. People. People who are down and in need of a hand up. Help me not be in such a hurry that I miss opportunities to serve others. Open my eyes and ears to the needs around me, both inside and outside of my home. Today I chose to be a good Samaritan through You. In Jesus name, Amen.

Tomorrow I will post another sweet picture that touched my heart. God’s timing was perfect. You’ll see why! 🙂

That's so great. That "looking for a loophole" thing really stood out to me. That always seems to be the case, doesn't it?

I'm beginning to wonder if God has hidden treasures planted like this one for all of us to discover.
Oh the questions I have today! Why did Justin make this? Was he just playing? Was it required for school and he never turned it in?
Oh how GREAT is our GOD to speak through the simplest of things to remind us of His closeness.
Stop, look and listen today. God might surprise you too!
Love you guys! Now back to my Esther Bible study.

Tiffany,
It's interesting how before you got to the story of the good Samaritan, I was already thinking about it while I read your son's story. What a joy to discover this treasure today!

Hi Tiffany…your son has such a heart for God that he has a heart for the hurting, too. His drawing shows that he knew his playmate was more important than anything else at that moment…to stop and take care of the "people"…what wonderful spiritual insight…there isn't anything a Christian mother would pray more for than to see her children love the Lord so deeply that their hearts would overflow with love to others.
God bless,
Mary

Beautiful story. I love to look back at my kids' early writings.
How they bless us in the way they see life. Their simple ways cut right through all the clutter we tend to get caught up on and see truth.
Happy Friday!
