The documentary film The March of the Penguins is an incredible glimpse into the life of penguins. I highly recommend it. The storms they face are unlike any we know. Winds a hundred degrees below zero. The obstacles for their survival are many, yet their will to live is strong. They have a plan and a purpose, and they are committed to see it through. They never falter. Even if it leads to their death.
A couple things from this movie spoke volumes to me. First was the power and strength of togetherness and community the penguins demonstrated. It was interesting to see how they survived the harshness cold by huddling together and circling. We, too, need one another during the bitter storms of our lives. Our chance for survival improves dramatically when others surround and cover us. I’ve seen this in my community of friends when I’ve been hurting, and it’s a beautiful thing.
The second thing that touched me was the penguins’ sacrificial love. They are willing to literally starve or die for love and to bring new life into this world. I wish I could say I’m like that too. But I complain during difficulty. And I’ve been known to be grumpy when I’m hungry. Would I die for love? I don’t know. I could impress you and say “of course.” But truth be told, I probably would look out for “number one” —me first. During a storm, I might turn away from commitment and towards comfort. I’m not sure I would pay the ultimate price. I hope I would if I had to though. After all, Jesus paid the ultimate price to bring “new life” to me. Where would I be without Him?
I recently read a book called Blue Like Jazz by Donald Miller. In his book, Miller has a chapter about penguins. After seeing this film, I understand why these animals drew Miller to God. The movie made me love God more, too.
I thank God for penguins. What a beautiful picture of sacrificial love, community, and commitment!

Wow! This is something I did not know about “penguins.” Truly interesting, hmm, just when I thought I knew it all, ah..just kidding, (wink, wink!) As usual, I’m ALWAYS IMPRESSED by your honest/humble heart. I will certainly have to see this film. I would love to love, shelter and put myself out for people the way penquins do however, I hope I never walk like one! Love ya Tiffany, Chrissy

Tiffany: You are the second person who has told me about scriptural truths they have seen while viewing this movie. My kids saw it with their Grandma and have not wanted to rent it again. Too bad!! Next time we are at the video store I am overridding them and getting it anyway. Thanks to your blog, my curiosity has gotten the better of me. I can’t wait to see it myself. Thanks for the insight.

Katie,
I would have wrote a lot more about the movie, but didn’t want to spoil it for those who haven’t seen it. I’m sure you’ll understand why I was so moved. I hope you watch it someday.
