As I prayed for direction with my future writings and blog posts, a devotion I wrote a couple years ago came to mind. I never found a publishing home for it, so I am making my blog its home.
I’m posting it because it describes where I have been for far too long. Here it goes.
Imagine with me, driving past Dave’s Diner and reading the storefront sign, “Lukewarm Coffee Served Here.” Why lukewarm? Does Dave actually think his sign will bring a thirsty crowd? I’m thinking he needs a new marketing person.
Lukewarm Coffee Served Here.
I wonder what the storefront sign of my life says? What do I my words, actions, and attitudes say to those who don’t know Christ, and even those that do? Am I lukewarm? Hot? Cold? Often my circumstances and emotions rule rather than Christ within me. My sign changes daily. I am lukewarm.
Speaking of coffee signs, Starbucks Coffee is one of my favorite places. I love a hot latte in winter and an iced latte in summer. Ever seen a warm drink on their menu? Me neither. It doesn’t sell. How about taking a sip of your coffee an hour after you bought it? Did you want to spit it out?
No one wants a lukewarm drink.
Isn’t a lukewarm heart towards God better than a cold one? Not according to Jesus.
In Revelation 3:14-22, John writes of his vision where Jesus rebukes the Laodicean church for being lukewarm and he says “he will spit them out of his mouth.” The church thinks they’re rich and in need of nothing, but actually they’re wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked. Verse 19 says, “Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline; be zealous therefore, and repent.”
Everyday is an opportunity for us to be a drink offering. The lost are thirsty, searching for something they can savor, something soothing, something that lasts. The world is full of counterfeit signs and tempting drinks. Dave’s Diner advertises something no one wants: A lukewarm drink.
We have something everyone needs: God’s grace and love.
Heavenly Father, I repent of my lukewarm heart. I’ve put my agenda above Yours. Ignite my heart aflame, so that the thirsty would taste Your goodness. May the sign I wear be one of truth and love. In Jesus name, Amen.
